Their backs emit a glittering sheen when touched by sunlight, making it a perfect, majestic animal to serve as the inspiration for an African silver coin series.  The Silverback Gorilla Coin program is the outcome of a collaboration between the African nation of Congo and the privately operated Scottsdale Mint in the United States. Many other sovereign governments have cooperated with the Mint in recent years to strike legal tender bullion coins on their behalf. Countries that do not have their own government mint have found this collaboration to be highly appealing. Each coin is struck with one troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver. Every coin has a face value of 500 Francs, making this coin recognized as legal tender in the Republic of the Congo. Lastly, this coin is struck with a limited worldwide mintage of 75,000 coins. Design: The obverse face featured a silhouette depiction of a ferocious Silverback gorilla. Perched on a rock, the strong gorilla is shown in a fierce stance. Leafy greens found in the gorilla’s native environment surround the animal. The words “Congo Silverback Gorilla” are written below the animal, and “1 oz 9999 Gold” are inscribed above it. The crest of the Republic of Congo, as well as the coin’s official face value, are shown on the reverse.
