1879-S NGC MS-68 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin Morgan Silver Dollars were the official dollar coin of the United States from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. The US Mint issued a commemorative bullion version in 2021 to mark the centennial of the last official minting of the circulating coin. Named after its designer, George T. Morgan, the Morgan Dollar was struck at various US Mint locations, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City until 1893, when coinage operations in this last facility ceased. The Bald Eagle depicted on the reverse has outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons, and laurels surrounding it. The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” encircle the entire design, while the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed above the eagle’s head.  The “S” mint mark from the San Francisco branch appears beneath the Eagle.
